Why Soreness Can Be Experienced After Massage
Why You May Experience Soreness After Your Massage
Often times after your massage, the worked area may be sensitive to the touch and may even be a little inflamed. If this is the case, there is no reason to be alarmed. Slight swelling after a deep tissue massage is called therapeutic inflammation and is completely normal. It occurs when new white blood cells come to the area to clean out all of the old, dead, toxic waste corrupting your tissue. When muscles tighten for any extended period of time, our brain can actually shut off sensation in that area. A massage helps remind your brain of the presence and need to keep circulation flowing through the area. There is typically a 3-day pattern after your massage:
DAY 1: (DAY OF MASSAGE): Little to no pain or discomfort. You feel relieved and loose with most, if not all of the pain in the affected area alleviated.
DAY 2: (THE DAY AFTER): It is not uncommon for people to wake up the day after a massage and feel like roadkill. Stiffness in your limbs and tightness in the muscles massage is very normal. Depending on your body’s toxicity, you may even feel sick if you consume alcohol on a regular basis or do other toxic activities such as smoking cigarettes. Drink a TON of water to help with the dehydration a massage causes and help your body recover. Don’t worry though, the light at the end of the tunnel is near!
DAY 3: You wake up feeling like a new person! Everything that you were struggling with the day before is now gone including the stiffness, tightness and inflammation. You will also be able to see a noticeable difference in your range of motion, pliability of your previously tight muscles, how far you can stretch among many other things. If there was an issue that had been plaguing you for a while you may not feel 100% better but you should feel measurably better than before.
